En 1992 à Bujumbura, au Burundi. Gabriel, 12 ans, mène avec sa soeur une existence paisible auprès de son père Michel, chef d'entreprise originaire des Vosges, et de sa mère Yvonne, une Tutsie née au Rwanda. Bientôt, la vie du jeune garçon bascule, alors que ses parents se séparent, que les tensions entre Tutsis et Hutus s'intensifient et que la guerre civile éclate dans le pays.
