Danielle et Josh ont recours à une mère porteuse prénommée Kailee pour avoir un enfant. Après la naissance de leur fille, Sophie, Kailee s'invite chez eux, puis les croise «par hasard» au parc, alors que leur contrat stipulait qu'ils ne devaient plus avoir de contacts. Les incidents se multiplient, mais la police ne peut rien faire sans preuves. Josh demande à son informaticien de pirater le site de l'agence de gestation pour autrui afin d'en apprendre un peu plus sur cette femme. Il s'avère que Kailee consulte une psychiatre depuis son enfance.
