Angleterre, 1927. Le château de Downton Abbey est en émoi. Durant leur séjour dans le Yorkshire, le roi George V et la reine Mary vont passer une nuit sur place ; un grand honneur dont il va falloir se montrer digne. Quelques jours avant le voyage royal, monsieur Wilson, le grand chambellan du roi venu inspecter les lieux, annonce au personnel du château qu'il ne sera pas associé à l'événement. La domesticité se révolte.
